In October of 1999 with less than two months away from her college graduation, a woman was sexually assaulted in her home. After giving a statement to the sheriff's deputies, she was taken to the hospital where a sexual assault examination was performed. The woman had serious concerns about how she was going to pay for the exam and asked the doctor "what do I do now?" She knew that she would need counseling to deal with what happened, but there was not a Rape Crisis Center listed for the community.  She asked the doctor where the nearest Rape Crisis Center was located, and he said there was not one in Hunt County.

A few days after the assault, the woman contacted the office of Governor George W. Bush and conveyed how upset she was that a Rape Crisis Center did not exist in her county; in fact, the nearest Rape Crisis Center was 61 miles away.  She was given information to implement Rape Crisis services in Hunt County, and a grant was then submitted to begin a full service Rape Crisis Center for Hunt County in December of 1999. The Hunt County Rape Crisis Center opened in July of 2000. Then, in May of 2002, the Board of Directors voted to change the name to Crisis Center of Northeast Texas in order to convey our focus on all aspects of crisis support.  In February of 2004, The Hunt County Children's Advocacy Center was added to our programs to assist families and victims of child abuse.
